Ein Passant, der von einer Karnevalsfeier auf dem Heimweg war, entdeckte in der Nacht zu Montag ein brennendes Gebäude. Das leerstehende Gebäude in der Kalkarer Straße, wurde früher als Sozialamt genutzt und ist ein Anbau an das Feuerwehrhaus in Hasselt. Die Feuerwehr Hasselt nutzt den Anbau um dort ein Heuwehrgerät zu lagern.
Um 1:04 Uhr wurde die Löschgruppe Hasselt der Freiwilligen Feuerwehr Bedburg-Hau alarmiert. Die Erkundung ergab brennenden Unrat im Gebäude, sowie weiteren brennenden Unrat im Garten.
Zur Brandbekämpfung wurde ein Angriffstrupp mit einem C-Rohr in den Innenangriff geschickt und zeitgleich begannen mehrere Trupps mit einem Aussenangriff, sowie mit einem Löschangriff auf den brennenden Unrat im Garten.
Das Feuer konnte schnell unter Kontrolle gebracht werden. Anschließend an die Nachlöscharbeiten wurde das Gebäude mit einem Überdruckbelüfter entraucht.
Insgesamt waren 20 Einsatzkräfte am Einsatzort. Die Kriminalpolizei hat die Brandursachenermittlung aufgenommen. Zur Höhe des Schadens konnte keine Aussage getroffen werden.
